Salungano Trading (Pty) Ltd is the trading arm of the Salungano Group - a proudly South African, majority black-owned resources and investment business with roots deep in coal and an eye firmly on the future.
We are built on over 40 years of industry experience. Our foundation was formed through the acquisition and merger of Chandler Coal and Macphail, which operated as Wescoal Trading before rebranding to Salungano Trading under the Salungano Group.
This deep heritage means we understand the nuances of the South African coal supply chain - grading, sizing, reliable delivery, and the trust relationships that underpin every tonne supplied. That knowledge doesn't disappear with a rebrand.
The Name
What is Salungano?
Salungano is rooted in the Tshivenda tradition of ngano - folk stories passed from one generation to the next, told around the fire, under the Baobab tree. The storyteller begins with "salungano, salungano"- "like a fairytale, like a fairytale" - and the listeners respond, staying present in the story.
For us, Salungano is a philosophy: our story continues. Every tonne of coal we deliver, every account we service, every community we employ in - is part of that unfolding story. A story we are writing together.
